HIGHEST NUMBER OF PEOPLE RESCUED BY AN INDIVIDUAL DURING A FLOOD

Late Shri Kisan Mahadev Khamitkar served as a boat operator at Peshwe Park in Pune, Maharashtra. On July 12, 1961, a devastating flood hit Pune due to the breach of the Panshet-Khadakwasla dam. During this time without considering his own safety or that of his family, he bravely used his boat to rescue 175 people mostly children & women’s affected by the flood, safely bringing them to the shore. On that historic day, he became the first Indian to undertake such a large-scale individual rescue mission and set a New World Record on July 12, 1961 at Pune, Maharashtra, India. The Record was supported by Shri Sanjay Yallappa Khamitkar and Family.
