LARGEST HINDU TEMPLE IN INDIA
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India is recognized as the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world, covering a total area of approximately 156 acres (631,000 square meters). The temple complex has a perimeter of about 4,116 meters (13,504 feet), making it one of the largest religious complexes globally.
The temple is architecturally distinguished by seven concentric rectangular enclosures, known as prakarams, enclosed by massive walls with a combined length of approximately 32,592 feet (9.94 kilometers). These enclosures are accessed through 21 monumental gopurams (tower gateways), including the prominent Rajagopuram, which is among the tallest in Asia.
The inner prakarams are actively used for religious rituals, temple ceremonies, and pilgrimages, while the outer prakarams (particularly the first three enclosures) function as a living temple-town, accommodating residential houses, commercial establishments, markets, and public utilities.
Despite this mixed usage, the entire परिसर remains under the administrative and cultural domain of the temple, qualifying it as a fully operational and continuously functioning religious complex.
Significance:
The temple represents a unique integration of sacred architecture, urban settlement, and continuous religious practice, sustaining its role as a major center of Hindu worship for centuries.
