LONGEST SERVING INDIAN FORENSIC SCIENTIST

Padma Shri Dr. J. M. Vyas, VC, NFSU Gandhinagar, Gujarat has been serving as a Forensic Scientist for the last 50 years. Dr Vyas started his career as a Forensic Scientist on 28th December 1973, in the Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS), Gujarat. Considering his yeoman service and outstanding contribution, the Govt. of Gujarat appointed him the first Director General of Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in 2009. The Government of India elevated the erstwhile Gujarat Forensic Sciences University to National Forensic Sciences University with a status of Institution of National Importance on 1st October 2020, and Dr Vyas was appointed as the founder Vice Chancellor of this premier Forensic Institution. Dr Vyas’s high level of commitment to the capacity building of Forensic Sciences in the country has face-lifted the Forensic Sciences to the new level. He has consistently worked in the direction of promoting forensic best practices globally and is instrumental in making NFSU an international Forensic Institution of repute. He has been part of many high-level committees and subject matter expert groups on policy formulation in Forensics and allied Sciences. In recognition to Dr Vyas’s unparalleled and outstanding contribution to the field of Forensic Sciences, the Govt. of India awarded him with the 4th highest Civilian award- Padma Shri in the year 2022.
